gBackGround

Intro Features Changelog. Screenshots Old Distributions. Gnome Home Page Contact me.

Sorry for the long vacation this site has been on, school then work etc. But it is now back up. And with a nice new permanent home here on sourceforge, I don't think it will be leaving again anytime soon. I have some cool new features planed for gBG like a two level background ( a lower level tile and an upper layer ) along with different backgrounds for each workspace/desktop without having to use E.

This is a Gnome Panel applet designed to change the background on you desktop. The source tarball (uncompiled source code in tared gziped format) is here.

These are the features included in the current version (1.0.0-beta2) of gBackGround:

Changelog

1.0.0 from 1.0.0-beta2
A couple of very minor bug fixes and I added some extra buttons to the Choose Dialog. Not a lot done but I hope to make somesignificant changes soon. Also you now get a little program called gBG primer which can be used to set the desktop before all of those session managed or automatic windows pop up that might want to be transparent.

1.0.0-beta2 from 1.0.0-beta
1.0.0-beta was defunct. If you have it you need to get the new release. Sorry for the inconvenience.

1.0.0-beta from 0.9.6-beta
Fixed a bug where gBG re displays a background in the wrong format under specific circumstances. Also, added moving background feature (by request). Thirdly, gBG is now capable of caching the thumbnails so that they will load faster after the first load. Finally, I now have gBG saving prefs every so often so it no longer loses them.

0.9.6-beta from 0.9.5
There was a problem where the applet ate up Xclients. This has been fixed. Also the applet is better at saving itself between sessions. More has to be done on this issue.

0.9.5
No changes as this was pretty much the original.

Here are some screenshots of my little applet (Many provided by Ingrid Schupbach):

This is the applet. It will sit on your Gnome Panel. It has two buttons. One to get a random background and one to pick your background:

Here is the window for picking your background. It has a combo box for choosing which directory (or a list of separate files) you want to look at and a button to add and remove files and directories:

Here is the file selection window. It has separate lists of your files and directories that you have added and a preview area:

And here is the properties window. As you can see it lets you get to the file selection window, change how you display your images, change if and how your background is automatically changed, how gBackGround starts up, and the method for determining mime types. Many of these options are also available in the dropdown menu:

If you want to see everything together you can look
here.

Here is some old stuff, I don't know why you'd want it but here it is:

If you have any problems, questions or suggestions about gBackGround you can email me at govindsalinas@email.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can. PS. I've had to change ISPs recently so my old email is no longer valid.

I apologize to anyone who has been trying to contact me.

Enjoy.
